Writers Work made a sensation with their ads where they claimed that even a budding writer could make up to $65/hour while working with them. But is that really possible? Is Writers Work even legit or not?

Technically saying, it is very much possible to get into the writing field and get jobs that pay $50/hour or more. You can even start your own blog as a writer and make a good amount of money from it.

I myself have earned $380,000+ from this blog alone. And I’m also constantly making $10K+ a month. But can Writers Work deliver what they promise?

So, I decided to try it myself before you try your hands on this site.

Have you seen those Google and FB ads where a company offers $20 to $65/hour while working as a freelance writer?

Yes, that company is Writers Work LLC, which owns and operates the writers.work website.

Being a writer of my own blogs, I was intrigued to try out this website to check its legitimacy and earning potential.

But before that, let’s check out some quick facts first:

There are many legit job sites for freelance writers, and I’ve also tried a couple of them.

So, I have a fair idea about a writing job provider being a legit one or a scammer. But this one gave me mixed feelings (I’ll soon reveal why).

 

What is Writers Work?

Before testing the website, I tried to find out the background of this company. According to BBB, this website was launched by Jennifer and Mark Harrell in 2018.

Based in Austin, Texas, Jennifer and Mark previously owned MyWritingJob.com, Surveys4Checks.com, and MasterWritingJobs.com. However, these websites no longer exist.

I previously tried MyWritingJob and MasterWritingJobs when they were available. And both these websites are dubious, and they had a pretty bad reputation.

So, while working on this Writers Work review, I was a bit skeptical from the very beginning.

Both MyWritingJob and MasterWritingJobs claimed themselves as high-paying websites for writers, and so did Writers.Work.

While the first two were already labeled as scams, there is a good chance that the last one will also flourish as a scam in the long term.

But on the contrary, the Writers Work website does look pretty legit. And they also offer various toolkits and training modules besides writing job offers.

At first look, I felt it is a hybrid between Fiverr and Udemy, where you can learn and get work at the same place.

But this website also offers a free grammar checker, an online document editor, and a project management tool.

My Findings: Writers Work is not the end client that provides jobs to writers. Instead, it is a job board or a marketplace that helps writers and companies connect. But yes, their ads don’t reflect that!

 

Features Of Writers Work

Writing is surely among the best part-time HFW jobs where you can actually make $50+/hour. Some of the jobs at Writers Work also claim to pay on that range.

But there are other features besides the job board that caught my attention. And here they are!

 

The Text/Document Editor

Once you take a subscription, you can access the online document editor for free right from your dashboard. It is not as advanced as Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

But yes, it offers basic editing, image insertion, formatting, and downloading a copy of the work as a Word or PDF file.

This editor also lets you publish your work directly on a linked WordPress or Medium account. I found it useful for budding freelance writers as they invest time to create their portfolio on Medium, especially in the era of Ai and automation.

There is another interesting feature of this text editor. You can play white noises, such as birds chirping or ocean breezes, that will help you to concentrate while you write.

 

The Grammar Checker

As a free tool, the grammar checker can handle many things, although you can’t compare it with industry leaders, such as Grammarly or Hemmingway.

This grammar checker provides basic spelling and grammar checks. It also gives you a readability score (following the Flesch reading-ease test) based on the fluidity and engagement of your writing.

Many writers do check their readability scores as it helps in on-page SEO.

 

The Portfolio Designer

With this designing tool, you can create your profile’s front page that you can also use as your resume while applying for jobs and writing projects.

You can upload your profile photo, link your previous works, and even link your social media profiles for easy connections.

You can also choose among various fonts, colors, and themes for your “About” section. It is like designing your profile on LinkedIn.

 

The Goal/Time Tracker

As a writer myself, I firmly believe that writing is a creative thing, which can be heavily impacted if you set a time limit. It is like telling a painter to draw their best piece within 1.5 hours.

That simply doesn’t work that way!

But that is also true that many writers prefer to set a goal. And this time and goal tracker helps you to do just that. You can set goals like writing a specific number of words per hour or per day for any particular project.

 

Training Modules (From Writers Work University)

It is true that writing is a job where you work alone most of the time. So, writers do need constant skill updates to stay in business.

So, I have quite a high hope from the Writers Work University segment, as I’m a regular student of Coursera and Udemy.

I do believe in constant learning and skill updating. But this segment disappointed me a big time, as there are better training videos on YouTube than this one.

I can only find 19 short video tutorials. Of these, 80% of videos are less than 5 to 10 minutes. So, cumulatively, the entire training is just an hour or two long.

And those training courses are not about writing but more about making profiles, connecting to clients, and crafting pitches.

 

How To Sign Up On Writers Work?

The signup process for Writers Work is pretty simple. They claim to provide WFH jobs that hire immediately, and it could be the reason why the process is quite straightforward.

My Take: Once you complete the signup process, you need to design your “About” section professionally to catch the attention of potential clients. Besides, you also need to enable the “Hire Me” button so that recruiters can contact you directly.

 

How Much Does Writers Work Cost? – The Pricing In 2024

While I was discussing this site with a few of my friends who are also seasoned writers, the first question was always surrounding whether Writers Work is free or not! No, it is not free.

It is true that you can start a new career at 40 or even 50 with Writers Work, but it will need investment. The current pricing plans are as follows.

Writing is one of the money-making hobbies that pay quite well. And this small investment is absolutely justified if the output is fruitful.

My Take: I checked the site at least once each year before I decided to give it a final try. And since I first discovered the site, the pricing and the discount have remained the same. Besides, there is no free trial available as well.

 

Additional Offerings (Upsells) By Writers Work

Writers Work does try to upsell additional things besides their standard subscription plan.

As they project writing as one of the best jobs for homemakers and stay-at-home parents, they always put something extra on the plate.

There are three additional offerings from Writers Work that I found during the signup process.

People usually fall for the additional upsells while looking for freelance writing jobs, as they think those will upgrade their skillset. But, if you are good with your craft, there is no need to purchase anything additional here.

My Take: It took a couple of clicks to exit from the additional offers, as I was constantly getting popups with their upsell offers. And there is no way to block them, even with Ad Blocker.

 

The Refund Policy Of Writers Work

It is true that Writers Work is a legit website, but there are many complaints about their refund policy. The company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee (full refund) if you don’t like their service.

However, many people on different forums complained that they never received the refund, even after contacting support multiple times.

Some even raised those issues on BBB, but the company representatives tried to settle it there to safeguard the reputation.

Many scam sites that offer second jobs for extra income do claim to provide refunds. But in reality, it will be impossible to get your money back. But in this case, at least a few of them got a refund.

 

How Does Writers.Work Actually Work?

It’s now time to reveal how Writers Work actually works! I’ve said earlier that it is a short-task site that offers writing jobs. But it is a bit different from how it works.

It seems Writers.Work fetch data from other job boards, as I’ve found various listings from different freelancing platforms in their filters.

Some of those are as follows:

They take job postings from various job boards and freelancing marketplaces and upload them to their own website. However, many of those listings are quite obsolete.

You need to first create an account on Writers.Work in the way I’ve already described to get started. And once done, it’s time to hunt for jobs.

Here are the steps:

If you are a newbie in this field, you can use the “beginner-friendly” filter on the search bar to find a job that suits your current expertise. However, when I checked it, there were hardly any legit listings available in that segment.

My Take: You need to pitch to the end client in many cases, which makes it among the worst jobs for introverts. But most of the freelance work does need direct communications.

 

How Much Can You Earn On Writers Work?

There is no doubt that Writers Work is a legit job board, although the advertisement of “up to $65/hour” is a mere marketing stunt! So, let’s find out how much you can actually earn here.

First, you need to understand that Writers Work is not the end client, and they don’t have any command over the actual payout. It just connects you to end clients, which have their own rates.

According to the current standard, you can get around $15 to $30/hour in most projects depending on your writing skill, your existing portfolio, and your experience.

It is true that you can’t make $500 fast and easily on this platform if you are not a seasoned writer. But yes, many mid-level writers can make $50 pretty fast here if they land on the right project.

It is even possible to get up to $100/hour as a seasoned writer. But for that, you need to upgrade your skill. You can take the free writing course curated by one of the best writing coaches, Holly Johnson.

She is already making more than $200,000/year. So, she will be a perfect coach (that too for free), especially if you are a newbie.

 

Pros & Cons Of Writers Work

Some companies do provide genuine WFH writing jobs, and Writers Work is just an aggregator that connects those companies to budding and experienced writers.

But it has its own advantages and disadvantages! Without mentioning those, this Writers Work review will be incomplete.

Although it is hard to get a writing assignment that pays $65/hour (according to their claim), you can surely find some jobs that pay up to $20/hour on Writers Work.

We can also check their trust factor by looking at ratings that they got on various platforms.

While researching for this Writers Work review, I also checked their social media accounts. Here is what I found!

Dreamshala Rating: 3.2/5 in terms of legitimacy, as this one is a legit job board. But 2.5/5 in terms of actual jobs and earning potential, as there are many outdated listings that are fetched from other job boards.

When I asked a few of the previous users whether Writers Work is legit or not, I got some mixed responses.

But yes, their ads are pure marketing stunt and doesn’t have any truth in them. You cannot earn $65/hour as a newbie. Instead, work to your skill and become a pro writer.

Remember that it is not a free money hack where you just create an account and start making hundreds of dollars a day.

The one-time charge of $47 is not much if it provides value for money to the users. But I found nothing interesting there, as the tools are very elementary, and the tutorials are outdated.
