How To Stop Buying Things You Don’t Need To Save Money?

The basic step to save most of your money is to understand your income and then pay attention to any unnecessary expenses that you incur.

You often pretend to buy things out of your will without realizing whether you need them or not.

I was the same person earlier, and believe me, my income wasn’t enough. Yet by following certain approaches, I saved money and could channel it into the correct means.

Later, as I grew in my career, I could reach seven figures of income and savings, which greatly helped to save money. Read my personally curated tips to stop buying things to save money.

1. Reduce Your Expenses By Earning FREE Gift Cards To Starbucks

Who could deny the delicious Starbucks coffee, especially Cappuccino lovers?

Cutting extra costs doesn’t mean to stop living your life or to lead a very basic life. It often means following a unique approach to fulfill your wishes.

I could save money because I used Swagbucks and Freecash, my all-time buddies, to earn free gift cards by completing surveys, watching videos, playing games on mobile, and shopping on the site for things that I otherwise need.

Thus, prefer small and quick wins as I often redeem those extra $50-$100 Starbucks gift cards. You can also choose from Amazon, Walmart, and more based on your needs.

Swagbucks is an authentic platform and to date has paid over $1.3 Billion USD to its users, including me. So if you don’t mind getting free gift cards, do try it out.

2. Eating Out Frequently

Always eat your meals mostly at home for your health and money.

I used to dine out frequently for most of my bills, and now, upon reviewing them, I realized I used to spend more than $20,000 annually.

While most of you think it’s impossible, many of my friends were also sailing in the same boat. Before your further judgments, I have presented a detailed breakdown of our personal food costs, excluding snacks, special drinks, and appetizers.

Below is a detailed list of the table of food from 2025. Trust me, pull out your receipts, and you will also feel shocked.

Day (Year 2022) Breakfast & Tea Lunch Dinner  Total
Monday  $11 $14 $23 $48
Tuesday $11 $14 $23 $48
Wednesday  $11 $14 $23 $48
Thursday $11 $14 $23 $48

These costs are not normal but actually give you a luxurious daily meal life, which you don’t realize but does affect your health. Do check your personal food costs along with it.

3. Quit Buying Branded and High-End Makeup Products

Beauty and personality matter a lot, and so you end up buying branded and high-end makeup products.

Slowly, you get addicted to it, and you splurge on expensive products that are actually toxic and not as safe as promised.

You just have to find affordable yet safe alternatives with the same ingredients and the same effect. That said, high-end products have a specific percentage of merely marketing costs, while others do not.

Thus, I save hundreds of dollars by being mindful of products I buy and invest the same money in alternative investments.

4. Cutting Cable and OTT Services Helped Me Save a Lot of Money

Cable costs in America can go more than $200, which is more than your major expenses bill combined.

Besides, the prices have drastically increased in the last few years. Of which data reveals that Americans waste more than $135 a month on cable channels they never watch.

While my bill doesn’t come this high, lower bills also come at a cost.

Most of you would now think of streaming services, but I canceled them as well. It’s not because of saving costs, but the time you waste on binge-watching your favorite shows and movies that cable can be productively utilized.

For instance, instead of binge-watching the entire season of Peaky Blinders at once, you can utilize it productively or to learn something new. A new skill helps you make some extra money.

After cancelling my cable and streaming services subscriptions, I transitioned to learning how to blog and started blogging.

By cutting cable, I just saved a little above $500 annually, yet my blogging venture of around 3 years ago now fetches me $10000+ every month.

You can check the income proofs below. It will help you clear debts, pay bills on time, and let you achieve financial goals. Most importantly, such activities would keep you engaged and won’t remind you of binge-watching.

5. Say No to Regular Outings or Drinking With Friends

Reduce the number of outings with your friends, peers, and other acquaintances. These usually cost more than your daily meal price plus leads to greater junk food intake.

Don’t completely eliminate it or be rude to them, just politely refuse.

Better money can be earned with productivity, which needs optimal health. Hence, save junk food intake only for a few special occasions.

Additionally, drinks age your body much faster and impact your organ health. So, consume it rarely in lower amounts instead of a complete cut-off. Also, you can’t ignore its high costs.

I instead spent my time exploring investing options, even from my meager income and Swagbucks cash via PayPal.

People thought I was crazy due to my income, but if I hadn’t started, then reaching six figures of savings would have been impossible.

6. Impulse Buying At The Grocery Store

Eating out is unhealthy and expensive, and here’s where switching to homemade meals helps to save a lot, with good health.

Yet, you would rush to the grocery store frequently.

But most of you would stroll around aimlessly and buy more groceries than needed.

Often, you are not able to use it, which leads to wastage of food and money, so savings are not feasible.

Hence, you need a meal plan and, accordingly, a grocery list to buy. Create a list for the same or use readymade Canva templates for meal prep. Even ChatGPT greatly helps to serve both purposes.

7. Quit Buying Unhealthy Foods

Never spend money on unhealthy foods and waste your money.

These include processed ones and packaged food often disguised as healthy. Initially, I opted for junk snacks, then swapped them with healthier ones.

You spend extra dollars thinking every penny is worth it, but is it true?

Instead, use cheap whole foods that are pocket-friendly and good for your health, like carrots, berries, apples, avocados, sweet potatoes, unsalted seeds, and nuts in their raw form.

Junk food has a lot of bad carbs that never fill your stomach, you get hungry sooner, and tend to buy more snacks, leading to more unhealthy eating plus spending.

8. Stop Buying Expensive and Overhyped Skincare Products

Research suggests that Americans allocate annually $492 solely to skincare and devote nearly 30 minutes to grooming

You think you are paying for your skin’s good health, but you can swap them with healthy alternatives, and yes, that doesn’t mean any random collagen supplement.

The following are the only things you need to reduce wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dark circles, sags, and more.

Natural Skincare Remedies

Apply sunscreen daily on your face, irrespective of the weather, like rain or snow. UVA rays from the sun cause skin aging faster, so opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ that protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

Rest and sleep are the most underrated factors; don’t compromise on 7-8 hours of sleep daily. It’s a beauty sleep for a reason that even $100 cream can’t fix.

Stress is the biggest enemy of your skin’s health, and with it, even the most expensive product won’t help.

Do meditation, exercise, deep breathing, and similar activities to stay stress-free. Opt for hobbies to keep yourself relaxed.

Replace junk food with an affordable, healthy, homemade meal. It should be well balanced with protein, Fibre, minerals, antioxidants like fruits, vegetables, dark chocolate without sugar, etc.

Don’t Eat Foods With Added Sugar and Bad Carbs

Don’t go no-carb, as our bodies need them.

Yet, that doesn’t mean you should spend on pasta, rice, pastries, white starches, potatoes, lasagna, pre-made salad dressings, etc., damage your skin badly.

It often consists of foods marketed as healthy but are not. Nearly 90% of the American diet consists of advanced glycation end-products, which age your skin faster. Pay attention to it and follow a healthy diet.

Pay Attention to Bone Health for Skincare

Most people don’t care about bone health when talking about skincare. Most skincare brands make money from their products that will never work because of your bone health.

But it costs just a healthy diet with an adequate amount of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K2, Magnesium, vitamins, and minerals.

Alongside doing some resistance training exercises and weightlifting to preserve your bones. Also, do some facial yoga and massages by yourself consistently for an effective glow.

Exercise

Exercising can be simple, like walking daily or doing jump jacks and 15-20 push-ups daily for effective circulation throughout the body.

Blood carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, including the skin. Apart from oxygen, blood flow helps to discard waste products from your skin, thus increasing your glow.

Understand Your Skin Type

Know what your skin type is, whether it is oily, dry, or combination, as it will help you understand what your skin can tolerate. Further, understand what works for your skin and what does not. Like skin products should be different for Asian, Caucasian, or White skin.

Vitamin C serums help, but are not suitable for all skin types. Thus, ensure to include plenty of Vitamin C foods for nourishing your skin’s health.

If Vitamin C serum suits you before moisturising your skin, then after applying it, you can apply 5% tranexamic acid mixed with 5% niacinamide serum to brighten your skin, and it reduces hyperpigmentation.

If Vitamin A products suit you, then use retinal (OTC) or tretinoin at night after cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser.

But ensure to use sunscreen the next morning as these products make your skin sensitive. Don’t use products with a long ingredient list, as over 90% of them contain chemicals and toxins that harm and age your skin.

Experiment with 100% Natural Oils

Cold-pressed and unrefined oils are ideal for your skin. Based on your skin, find out which suits you like Vitamin E, argan, rosehip, jojoba, or similar, that benefit your skin’s health.

Apply coconut oil on your arms and legs for effective moisturization and glow. But never use it on the face as it clogs pores and can lead to acne and disturbed skin health. But yes, it acts as a good makeup remover.

These are the cost-effective and natural remedies to manage your skin care routine without hurting your wallet and savings.

9. Prepacked and Ready-to-go Meals

Buying ready-to-go food mixes from the grocery stores and grab-and-go pizzas are much cheaper and tempting than buying from cafes and restaurants.

But they are just as unhealthy as restaurant food, with a lot of cheap ingredients and preservatives.

Plus, though cheap yet much more expensive than what you can cook at home. Be it pre-made lasagna from Costco or your favorite frozen food.

Though that convenience helps to save you a few dollars per hour but costs you hundreds of dollars in hospital bills.

So, do your meal prep for 5 days a week and accordingly prepare premixes at home that help you save time. I have been doing this for many years.

10. End Magazine Subscriptions

When you become obsessed with certain things, you sign up for magazines for inspiration. But I don’t have great practical solutions, only fancy photos. So, instead, use Pinterest.

One of my personal tips is to find inspiration on Pinterest related to the subject, like home decor.

Then upload it to ChatGPT, give your home’s pictures, specify budgets, preferences, and inspiration. Accordingly, it will give you the best results.

11. Stop Buying Too Many Clothes

Have you thought about how earlier skinny jeans were the fashion, then oversized cargos, and the next day it will be something else?

Fast fashion costs a lot, and suddenly you become a shopaholic,c spending all your money, as I have done that. Instead, opt for a capsule wardrobe that keeps your style top-notch without costing much money.

Trust me, sales are the biggest traps that fashion houses target us with.

A capsule wardrobe doesn’t ask you to have more clothes, just 40 good-quality pieces mostly in neutral or standard colors, which you can mix and match.

I recommend neutral colours with simple silhouettes as they are timeless and you can pair them up with anything. For example, a classic white button-down, black trousers, a little black dress, etc.

12. Stop Buying Random Stuff And Use Workers’ Methods

Being obsessed with spending on random things like toys, stationery, or cute characters is relatable.

You spend a lot of bucks randomly and have a lot of waste at home. In the long run, you can keep saving it and invest it to build an emergency fund or for your vacations.

Every dollar you save this way should act as a “worker” and then wait till it grows to more dollars or workers. This way, you will have much of your money work for you without literally investing or arranging extra money.

So, every time you spend $5-$10 on random stuff, ask whether you want to spend your workers, which can create more workers. Thus, you can compound a few dollars into something big just like I did over the years.

Final Thoughts

So, what do you think, which things to stop buying to save money? I am pretty sure you would have realized a lot of unnecessary spending habits

The number one tip is to stop impulsive buying, then spend some free time to complete the Freecash platform to earn extra money.

It helps you make more money, which you can use for gift cards that replace certain expenses or can also be cashed out.

Remember, there’s no limit to how much you can save, nor is there any limit to your expenses. Just ensure the only thing that can limit you is health, so pay attention to it and follow a sustainable living approach.
